Associate in Science

Our education degree will start your career on a path of service. The Education Associate in Science offers students a theoretical and practical foundation for careers in teaching, social services, and more. The program is designed to allow students to tailor their coursework to their immediate or long-term career interests. Graduates are prepared to enter the workforce or transfer to a four-year institution. Our academic advisors are available to counsel with students as they select electives consistent with their transfer goals.

Fieldwork Labs

Many education courses have a fieldwork requirement where you’ll gain firsthand teaching experience. A background check and fingerprinting are required before enrolling in any course with fieldwork opportunities.


Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Apply strategies in curriculum development, instruction, methodology, and assessment to the development of a positive learning environment.
  • Plan instructional activities that engage all learners in problem solving, critical thinking, and natural inquiry.
  • Evaluate instructional technologies and multimedia resources for use in developmentally appropriate educational activities.
  • Use reliable information resources to find current research on education policy and practice.
  • Describe the physical, cognitive, and emotional aspects of child and adolescent development within a social and cultural context.
  • Discuss the history and philosophy of education in the United States and its influence on current law and policy.
  • Analyze the instructional needs of a diverse population of learners.
  • Use clear communication skills to collaborate with learners, families, colleagues, and other stakeholders in the community.
  • Determine the ethical behaviors required of professional educators in classrooms, schools, and local communities.

Careers

Education program graduates are prepared for work in classrooms as teachers or paraprofessionals and in social service organizations. Graduates may also choose to continue their education and earn a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field. The Education program may offer teachers an avenue for recertification for a current teaching certificate. Teachers seeking recertification course approval need to inquire about specific courses with the Maine Department of Education.
